STEM 7/8 Lego Module Instructions
Day 1
In the first day of this module, you are going to learn more about the EV3 Robot and the Lego Mindstorms software used to program the robot. While there is not a lot of reading in this particular day, there is a longer video that walks you through the entire process and shows you what you need to learn to program the robots for the module.
Once you have viewed the video and understand all the material contained in it, then you will have a Day One Knowledge Check to take. You will need to do this and then report to Mr. Hill once you have finished |

More about the Mindstorm ev3 robots
The Core SetThe LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Core Set contains the software and elements to start teaching STEM subjects using robotics to middle school students.
LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 enables students to build, program, and test their solutions based on LEGO building bricks and real-life robotics technology. The Core Set includes 541 elements that can be used for teaching science, technology, engineering, math, and computer science. The Core Set comes in a sturdy storage bin with a sorting tray for easy classroom management and includes three servomotors, five sensors (gyro, ultrasonic, color and two touch), a rechargeable battery, connecting cables, printed and digital building instructions, and LEGO® Technic building bricks for creating a wide variety of models. At the heart of LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 is the EV3 Intelligent Brick. A compact, powerful computer-in-a-brick that makes it possible to control motors and collect data from sensors. It turns your students’ models into responsive moving robots. *Description directly from the Lego site |
The Expansion SetThis set contains a wide range of supplementary elements to continue the theme of critical thinking and creativity featured in the LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Core Set. It is designed to allow students to take their robotics experience to the next level.
Contains 853 bricks and building instructions for 6 showpiece models. Comes complete with a sturdy storage bin with a sorting tray for easy classroom management. Additional building instructions and programs for several models are available. Additional parts include a wide variety of special elements, including: different gears, a large turntable, robot personalization parts, unique structural elements, beams, axles, and connectors. This set helps students build larger and more complex models, while also providing extra parts and replacement elements. *Description directly from the Lego site |
ev3 softwareStudents can program their creations using an intuitive drag and drop interface that allows them to evolve simple commands into complex algorithms.
The 48 step-by-step tutorials are designed to help educators and students master basic and advanced programming as well as hardware and data logging functions. Bring experiments to life by setting threshold values for sensors, and assigning them actions, such as programming them to make a sound when a certain temperature is detected by the sensor. The built-in content editor enables teachers to customize the curriculum and create their own lessons. It enables students to capture their work directly inside the software creating their own digital workbook, making classroom management and assessment easier. The software is based on National Instruments LabVIEW™, the industry-leading graphical system design software used by scientists and engineers worldwide. The LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 software lets your students:
